Step inside the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican Museums, one of the most beautiful corridors in Vatican City. These incredible Renaissance maps of Italy, painted in the late 1500s and designed by Ignazio Danti for Pope Gregory XIII, stretch along an entire hallway inside the Vatican.
As you walk through the gallery, the maps take you on a journey from northern Italy near the Alps to Sicily, revealing cities, mountains, ports, and ships as they were known during the Renaissance. We also look at the stunning vaulted ceiling decorated with frescoes, gold leaf, and clever perspective techniques.
