With 60% of the out of school children in Nigeria being girls, and mostly those from the Northern region, we need to rethink the strategies currently in place to educating and empowering them. Safiya share a story of Fatima, a 17 year old house help whose world and life perspective made her realize the metaphoric box that she and many like her have placed themselves within. A box where she believes her menial job is more profitable to her life and current socioeconomic condition than the time she thinks she is wasting in the four walls of the classroom. Safiya prefer a unique and tested solution to see that we empower Fatima and her peers by adapting education and empowerment programmes to Fatima's current situation and not the other way around. Mrs. Safiya A. Ibrahim is a Media and Public Relations consultant and serial entrepreneur, registered under her business hub Serendipia Lifestyles.
Safiya has over fifteen years experience in Print, Radio, and TV, working with both local and International media and NGOs such as WE FM Abuja,
BBC Media Action, CNBC Africa and CapNews Online, Ottawa, Canada. She is currently A PR and Media Officer for NG-Cares as well as a Consultant writer for the BBC. She is a stout advocate for women & girls empowerment and takes joy in using spare time to share her experience with the youth. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
