A Kuksa is a wooden cup (also called Guksi, Kasa), traditionally carved with hand tools. In this video, I'll show you how to power carve a Kuksa, using an angle grinder and a couple of attachments made by Arbortech. Power carving wood is really fun and very easy to do with the Arbortech tools.
I used a birch log that I found in my local craft store. Birch burls are traditionally used, but those are hard to acquire. Hardwoods like cherry or maple would also be a good choice. Or preferably another hardwood burl.
I wore my safety glasses and dust mask all throughout the video. I made sure to hold the power tools with both hands. I don't recommend just using one hand.
I used CA glue to seal a couple of hairline cracks, but I soaked the entire kuksa in organic flaxseed oil for 2 days. Then wiped of excess oil and allowed the oil to cure for about 3 weeks. 8 weeks would be preferred.
The cup seems to hold hot and cold drinks well. No leaks so far! This will make a nice addition to my camping gear. It's wonderful to hold it in my hand and drink a cup of coffee.
I hope you enjoy the video! If you do, please HIT the SUBSCRIBE button. Leave a comment and let me know if you have any questions. Or perhaps you have additional tips for making a Kuksa.
Thanks and Happy Woodworking!!
