In the Yakan Village of Zamboanga City, 63-year-old Master Weaver Salma Ballati, along with her granddaughters and daughter-in-law Madilyn Capin, carries on the tradition of Yakan weaving in Zamboanga City in Mindanao, Philippines.
Weaving is more than a craft—it’s their livelihood. Without weaving, they have no income; without income, they cannot sustain their families through food. This micro-documentary sheds light on how their intricate designs and culinary traditions are interwoven, preserving their heritage and sustaining their community.
This short film "Threads of Tradition" explores how these women weave not just patterns but the very fabric of their survival. It highlights how their intricate designs and culinary traditions are interwoven and interconnected, ensuring their community's sustenance and the preservation of their rich cultural heritage amidst the challenges of modern life.

We are proud to announce that Threads of Tradition won Best Micro Film at the Las Vegas Filipino Short Film Festival! 🎬🏆 As part of the Istorya experience, our Sulu pop-up dinner series blends food and documentary storytelling to your dining tables. Each video that we share highlights a unique facet of Philippine culture that connects you to the Philippines.
Being trusted to share stories of our motherland’s indigenous communities is the highest honor—and we’re so grateful to be able to share these films to accompany our Sulu pop-up dinner series. As young Filipino Americans exploring our collective heritage, documenting the Yakan weavers’ life and legacy showed us how tradition connects past to present, there to here.
This recognition from the Las Vegas Filipino Short Film Festival means wonders for our team’s current journey. What started as a micro-documentary fuels the fire to continue honoring countless stories waiting to be told in full depth—stories we’re committed to bringing to broader audiences through both plates and lenses.
Maraming salamat to our Las Vegas community, our guides, and most especially to the masterweavers of Zamboanga Salma Ballati and Madilyn Capin who opened their hearts and homes to us. This is for you. Let’s keep sailing.
