In 2003, while her family was on vacation in Pakistan, Shafilea was forced to marry a Pakistani boy and accidentally drank detergent to commit suicide. She then returned to England and continued her studies at university.

On September 18, 2003, Shafilea went missing. Initially, the police did not investigate deeply because she had run away from home many times. However, when they discovered many poems expressing dissatisfaction with Shafilea's family, the police became suspicious and installed eavesdropping devices in her house.

On 18 December 2003, police arrested Shafilea's parents, Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed, but there was no evidence and they were released. In 2004, Shafilea's body was found on the banks of the River Kent after a flood.

In 2010, Shafilea's younger sister, Alesha, was arrested for theft and claimed that her parents killed Shafilea because she refused to marry according to their wishes. Iftikhar suffocated her with a nylon bag. Based on Alesha's testimony, Shafilea's parents were arrested and tried.

In 2012, Farzana confessed that her husband, Iftikhar, was the one who killed Shafilea. Both were sentenced to 25 years in prison for honor killing. After the case, July 14 every year was chosen as Memorial Day for victims of honor killings.
