In the middle of the Portuguese mountains, lies a town without a single inhabitant. The last resident, a 72 year old man, left the village in 2006. He could not stand the loneliness of having an entire village to himself and left for another parish.

"What were we doing there living alone? Silence grinds our heads," he says, opening an anguished smile. He moved to a village not far away, where at least they have the company of nine other residents.

The town we’re exploring today, which once belonged to a dozen residents, has become a ghost village, with tarred roads, electricity and even a fountain, opened in 1987, which still gushes water. Surprisingly, most of the houses were still completely furnished, as if the former inhabitants just vanished into the blue. Around the town, there are still other villages with local farmers who insist on living there. But there are less and less cultivated fields that, over the past 20 years, have been swallowed up by the maelstrom of eucalyptus that covers entire slopes.
