Types of Bases :

Rapid support base: typically without meaningful defense or even good placement, intent is facilitating specific support needs which is generally short term.

Long term support in non-combat zone: typically with some defensive measures, but far enough behind friendly lines that the bases get little attention except to pull vehicles or utilize orbital/flail/glaive.

Long term support combat zone: typically front lines and sometimes beyond. Fortified as much as possible, can provide loads of vehicles and will be targeted by orbital/flail/glaive if you don't target it first.

Tactical position control bases: choke points, high grounds, flanking position, possible fall back, frequent safe haven and ammo resupply location.

Battle base: under fire, intending to provide ongoing fight with cover, angles, obstructions, aids, this is not proper base construction, this is often used to get a foothold in tough fights.
