Edited six years later to add:
Holy crap, people, read the freakin' comments before you add on yet ANOTHER "the New York Reload was originally for revolvers!" comment that misses the entire point.
Seriously. We know that already. The entire POINT is that people NOW, in the age where most people carry semi-autos as their primary, still seem to think that the NYR is automatically faster than a simple emergency reload. And that's simply not true at all.
Sheesh, folks. We aren't comparing reloading a revolver to a NYR. We are talking about people automatically thinking that a New York Reload is automatically faster than reloading your primary semi-auto pistol.
Back to the original description:
______________
There seems to be this overall assumption that a "New York Reload" (drawing a second gun) is automatically faster than performing a standard reload. Given the fact that a backup gun is normally smaller, with less capacity, and holstered in a much-less-accessible position, I got curious as to how much actual difference there was in time.
Actual discussion here: https://precisionresponse.wordpress.c... (Reading this before disagreeing with this video concept would probably be a good idea.)
Notes:
1) I don't carry strong-side IWB on the hip. I really don't like it.
2) While my carry gun can certainly take being thrown around, I don't like the idea. The more it gets bashed around, the larger possibility of issues. Plus, that part where it might bounce and point back at me doesn't thrill me, whether it is empty or not.
3) My "backup" in this case is a G19 (a common primary carry gun) in an IWB strong-side hip holster (a common primary carry mode). It seems reasonable to assume that a common BUG would be both harder (slower) to access and less accurate at speed. (Don't tell me that you can draw and shoot a G26 with the same speed and accuracy as a G19.)
Last note: My BUG draws AND my reloads were nothing to write home about in this video. (In my defense, it was FREEZING out.) Both being mediocre, however, means the comparison still seems to be valid. That being said, however, this video is only one data point from one point with one particular set of equipment. I was just curious as to what amount of difference there was for me. Answer: None, really. Other than it is a lot easier to carry an extra mag than it is an extra gun.
Really the last note: Yes, I was shooting at a target at 7 yards, and aiming sufficiently at speed so that all hits were in the A-zone of a standard USPSA target.
