The Blue flag award is given to the safest, cleanest, and environment-friendly beaches of the world.
Padubidri beach near Udupi has been awarded the coveted ‘blue flag’ tag by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environment Education (FEE).
Kasarkod beach near Honnavar in Uttara Kannada district is the other beach in Karnataka that was awarded blue flag tag along with Padubidri.
The FEE approves the certification based on 33 stringent criteria under 4 broad categories of environmental awareness, environmental education, environmental management and beach safety.
The two beaches, Kasarkod Beach near Honnavar in Uttara Kannada and Padubidri Beach near Udupi, are among the eight in the country to have received the title.

India is now the first country in the world to receive the Blue Flag Certification for 8 beaches in a single attempt.
It is an outstanding feat considering that no ‘Blue Flag’ nation has ever been awarded for 8 beaches in a single attempt…this is also a global recognition of India’s conservation and sustainable development efforts.
Kasarkod and Padubidri beaches possess solid waste management plants, grey water treatments plants, seating arrangements, clean drinking water, washroom, changing room, bathing facility, disabled friendly and general toilets, parking facilities, solar power plants and solar lighting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tweeted that it’s a “wonderful feat”. He mentioned in his tweet how this reputed title shows the importance India attaches to protecting beaches, furthering sustainable development.
