Does Your Short Game Travel? How to Play Well on a Course You’ve Never Seen-John Hughes Golf

I’m often asked: “Hey John, when I go play somewhere I’ve never played before, what should I be focused on?”
Here’s my answer — your short game has to travel.
Ball striking is ball striking. Whether you’re in Orlando, Hot Springs, Colorado, Argentina, or anywhere else, that part of your game is the easiest skill to “bring with you.” What doesn’t travel so well is your short game: understanding how spin and reaction change on different greens, how your chips release, and what the green speed does to your putting.
In this video (filmed at Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate, with the same travel lessons I see at Omni Homestead and beyond), I break it down into 3 priorities when you arrive at a new course:
1.Putting to feel green speed
2.Chipping to learn check vs. release around the green complexes
3.Distance-control wedges (I use an 80–90 yard shot) to see how the ball reacts when it lands
That information tells you how to miss greens smarter, chip it closer, and give yourself better putts — especially when you’re playing a course for the first time.
