With 10 incidents and seven injuries related to carbon monoxide (CO) in 2022, CO continues to be a dangerous hazard across our province. To learn more about the symptoms, sources, and risks of CO poisoning, we sat down with Dr. Bruce Campana, a hyperbaric physician at Vancouver General Hospital. Each year, Vancouver General Hospital’s Hyperbaric Unit cares for approximately 20–40 patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. Many people may not even be aware that they require care.
Known as the “silent killer”, CO is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas that is a byproduct of many common fuel-burning appliances. Exposure to CO interferes with the body’s ability to absorb oxygen and prolonged exposure can cause CO poisoning, resulting in serious injury or death. Due to the nature of CO symptoms, most victims don’t realize they have been exposed until it’s too late.
