The champagne flute shattered against the marble floor, crystal fragments scattering like diamonds across the polished stone. But Emma Chen didn't notice. She was too busy staring at the man who'd just called her "sweetheart" with that insufferable smirk, too furious to care that every person in the gilded ballroom had stopped mid-conversation to watch.
"Excuse me?" Her voice came out low, dangerous. The kind of quiet that preceded storms.
The man—tall, dark-haired, wearing a tuxedo that probably cost more than her annual salary—tilted his head, clearly amused. "I said, sweetheart, the waitstaff entrance is in the back. This event is invitation only."

For three heartbeats, nobody moved. Nobody breathed.
Then he laughed.
Not a polite chuckle. Not an embarrassed nervous sound. A genuine, delighted laugh that started deep in his chest and transformed his entire face. The cold, arrogant expression melted into something boyish, almost warm, and infinitely more dangerous.
"Marry me," he said.
Emma's mouth fell open. "What?"
