Adjusting the string height on an acoustic guitar

Описание: I adjusted the string height on an affordable acoustic guitar.

Before replacing the saddle, I ensured the guitar was in proper condition with no issues like neck warp, then determined the desired string height. Instead of using the original saddle, I shaved down a different saddle I had acquired. The rough amount to shave is about double the height reduction needed, but I shave less with coarse sandpaper first, then use fine-grit sandpaper for finishing and fine-tuning. While lowering the saddle too much might cause interference with the bridge, I think it's more likely to result in the angle becoming too shallow or making removal difficult during the next replacement.

Fine-tuning the saddle is done by mounting it on the guitar, tuning it, measuring the string height, and playing it.

This time, I tried using a slightly pricier handy tool to see if it made the job easier. If you don't have one, wearing thin disposable nitrile gloves makes it easier to hold the small saddle. Bone saddles give off a noticeable odor when shaved, so wearing a mask is advisable. For cleaning up the fine, light shavings, use a dampened paper towel to scoop them up, then wipe the surface dry before using a lint roller. If you don't have one, masking tape works well.

The Adjustable Nut Saddle Sander held the saddle securely and made sanding easy, but it was quite pricey at around $23 when I bought it. The wheel only serves its purpose during the final fine adjustments; before that, it mainly saves the hassle of repeatedly checking the sanding progress and makes gripping easier. Be careful not to use it too roughly, as the base of the holder itself can get worn down by the sandpaper.

After replacing the saddle, playing became much easier, and the middle-to-high range now has a nice, extended feel. However, I think the 6th string side could have been a little bit higher😅
