Watch this interesting LONG-LENGTH (approx. 10 min., 54 sec.) video of Part 2 (there are 4 in total) of the Helmstetter's Highball train ride with the magnificent No. 1309 steam locomotive leading the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) train. This train ride begins at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad train station in Cumberland, MD, and rides out to Helmstetter's Curve, stops, and then returns to the same station on a bright, sunny day.

The video begins with the camera peering out a window on the right side of the train, looking at the Great Allegheny Passage (a 150-mile bike trail from Cumberland, MD to Pittsburgh, PA), Wills Creek, a road, and two forested mountains on either side. Later on in the video, the train gains a little altitude and cuts through some of the mountain rock and forests. Periodically one will hear the horn blaring and see soot from the locomotive burning coal. When riding in this open railcar, the coal soot is very intense and gets into one's eyes without eye protection.

The WMSR "is a heritage railroad based in Cumberland, Maryland, that operates passenger excursion trains and occasional freight trains using both steam and diesel locomotives over ex-Western Maryland Railway (WM) tracks between Cumberland and Frostburg. The railroad offers coach and first-class service, murder mystery excursions, and special seasonal trips." (1)

The No. 1309 steam locomotive, aka the "Maryland Thunder," is repeatedly shown up ahead pulling the WMSR train on this ride. And it is definitely the star of the show! It is a special locomotive, for it is the LARGEST STEAM LOCOMOTIVE IN REGULAR SERVICE in the US, and it "is the only articulated steam locomotive operating east of the Mississippi River." (2)

To see the 1309 locomotive in person is really an AMAZING EXPERIENCE, whether it's just standing there at the station waiting for passengers or rolling down the tracks. To hear its whistle, with its WONDERFUL SOUND, transports one back into time. There is steam slowly emanating out of many orifices of the locomotive, which makes it appear like it's a beast that is alive. When the WMSR train departs the station, one can see the BLACK COAL SMOKE coming out the front of the 1309 locomotive and WHITE STEAM coming out more toward the back of the 1309 locomotive.
