“I was inspired to write this monologue after a random trip to the farmer’s market in Saughall one Saturday morning. As we were queuing to pay, my eyes were drawn to a framed picture on the wall of the village’s Vernon Institute. A picture of Mary Davis ‘the horned woman of Saughall’. This piqued my interest, and on further research, I became interested in the idea of how she survived, given the times in which she lived. Although a work of fiction, I wanted to explore themes of identity, resilience, and societal judgment. I think we need to challenge perceptions of monstrosity and highlight how fear drives exclusion. In my monologue, Mary resists shame to reclaim her story and refuses to be defined by others. Mary lived in a time of witchcraft and terror. She owns her truth.”

This monologue film, ‘The Horned Woman of Saughall’, is the second in a series of monologues from the North West End Acting School. The School is based in the City of Chester.
