The answer to this riddle will undoubtedly annoy you, not only when I tell you the broad range that I’ve personally been paid as a logo designer, but because of this. Wishy-washy. response.
A logo is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.
As a designer, my job is to find the middle ground between having too much work (i.e. my prices are too cheap) and having no work (I’m too expensive) and slide that scale until I find the sweet spot. And that scale fluctuates constantly depending on how big the client is, any economic uncertainty, how much time you have to complete the job, and how cool that project is to me.
And this has meant that I’ve done logo projects for $0 and I’ve done logos for more than $10,000 dollars. Now that might sound expensive, but when I tell you that BP paid more than $200M for their logo, that $10K price tag doesn’t sound so bad. And they paid that price for peace of mind. Peace of mind that the design system works in multiple markets, that the colour psychology reflects their values, that the design inspires trust, and so much more.
And the better job you do at convincing your clients that you’re the expert and the right person for the job, the more you can charge.
