Rotary Lip Seals Crimped Case Seal vs Componentized Design

Eclipse specializes in the manufacture of PTFE lip seals - similar to rubber lip seals that you can find off the shelf, but much more specialized to perform at higher speeds, pressures, and temperatures.

In a cased seal, the PTFE sealing lip does all the work, but we need the metal case to provide a mechanical lock or “press-fit” so that the seal stays located in the housing. There are two distinct manufacturing methods for making the case: These are what we call a crimped case and a component cased seal. There are pros and cons of each method.

The idea behind a crimped case seal is actually quite simple. The metal case is machined with a small groove on the inside diameter. The PTFE lip is then inserted into the groove and the case is subsequently pressed and the lip is permanently crimped into the assembly. The main reason we would go this route is when we need to produce a low quantity with the quickest lead-time.

With a componentized seal, the seal features are manufactured as separate elements: The case, the lip, a gasket and a spacer. You are probably thinking this is lot of work compared to the crimped case seal, however, now that we have divided the components up, we can use automation to economically produce those components at high volumes. This method requires dedicated tooling to be made, but the total cost savings are substantial if you’re project requires hundreds or thousands of seals.

Both configurations will operate identically in the application and it’s even possible to start with a crimped case seal for prototyping and change to a component cased seal when the project reaches production levels.
