I am here today with Dr. Norman Rosenthal best selling author, internationally renowned psychiatrist and world renowned medical researcher.
He has written a fantastic new book, "The Gift of Adversity."
Question by Bobby Roth:
First of all what drove you or inspired you to write a new book?
Answer by Dr.Norman Rosenthal:
Well I had a 10 year hiatus between a book that came out about 12 or 13 years ago and my latest batch of books, because in the last 5 years I have written 4 books and those happened to be the 5 years when I have been doing Transcendental Meditation. And, what happened as I started to meditate I began to access wells of creativity and consciousness within myself. And, from those wells of creativity and consciousness came a series of books. One was my last book "Transcendence," which was about meditation per se and then the lessons of my life presented themselves to me and somehow I found within myself the capacity for solitude and sustained creativity that I had not previously been able to access. So, adversity became okay because I could sit with it and I could mine it, and that is where the new book came from.
Question:
What do you mean by adversity?
Dr. Norman Rosenthal:
Put very simply, adversity is when something bad happens. And, when you have adversity you have to go through stages of processing it. You have to accept the adversity and then you have to somehow, at a very deep level handle or process the adversity. You also have to regulate your physical and emotional state. Now, meditation can be incredibly helpful in all of these capacities.
