Today, we're learning what to expect when you first open Affinity, which is the Home Screen!

What is the hype with this all new Affinity app? 👀

If you didn't know, for a long, long time, the Adobe suite of apps (Photoshop for Photo Editing, Illustrator for Vector Design, InDesign for Printing & Publishing Work), has been the go-to for Graphic Designers, especially professionals. However, there would soon be a competitor called Affinity by Serif, who would make an alternative suite of apps: Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, Affinity Publisher. These three respective apps share similar purposes, functionality, and features as Adobe's apps without all the drama.

What drama? Well, many users of Adobe has abandoned them because of what they call "anti-consumer practices", these include but not limited to: A "cancellation fee" that you pay to cancel your subscription, confusing Plans & Pricing, switching from a one-time payment model to a subscription model, etc. You could pay for Adobe and try cancelling then suddenly get told you must pay a fee. 🥀

Serif's Affinity apps are much simpler, as they use a one-time payment model. You pay for, say, Affinity Designer V2 once and you use it forever. Thinking of cheating on it and using Inkscape instead? No problem. You don't "cancel a subscription", you just stop using the app. No cancellation fees drama, no legal drama, no K-drama, nothing.

But come late 2025... Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer, and Affinity Publisher has all been merged into a single app: Affinity 3 by Canva! (Officially called just "Affinity"). So you get the WHOLE package of Photo Editing from Affinity Photo, Vector Design from Affinity Designer, and Print & Publishing Work from Affinity Publisher, all in ONE app! But that's not the best part... not at all.

This app is free. And I mean free free. They don't train any AI on your data, they don't bomb you with ads, they don't lock essential design features behind a paywall, you don't have to be online to use it, you really get it for free! 🤯

The only things locked behind paywalls in Affinity are a subject selection tool (which can easily be replaced by a similar automatic selection tool that's still free), and Gen AI, which... let's be real, isn't free anywhere else. Even when you pay for an Adobe subscription, you get a limited amount of credits to use their AI, paying for more credits if you use up your monthly credits! Besides, not everyone will use it considering the controversies surrounding Gen AI (ᵕ—ᴗ—)

Everything else? Photo Editing capabilities? Icon and Logo design features? Printing aid? Completely free just by downloading the app.

Trivia: This change happened when Canva bought Affinity in late 2025.
