The most heavy metal game I have ever played in my life.
A masterclass in level design and pacing.

I played most of Id FPS and in my opinion it’s their best single player campaign.
It is arguably the best FPS ever made, at least for me it goes into the "legendary" shooters with Quake 1, Duke Nukem 3D and Perfect Dark.
It is astonishing that they release shit like Doom 3 and Quake 4 after this masterpiece, it’s almost like they’ve never learn from their own works.
At least we have some kind of a redemption with Doom and the brutally good gameplay even if the level design is still not on par with their older titles.

It might be the best level design in a 3D FPS game, I still think that some Build engine games have a better and tighter level design (Duke Nukem 3D for exemple) but it is "easier" to do in "2.5D" than a full 3D game like this one.
On the other hand, the gameplay of Quake 2 is way more satisfying than any build engine games.
The enemies variety is ridiculously high and the gun feedback is really good.
All of that with the awesome level design give you a product that is highly focused, you will probably never see that again with how games are made today.

I was one of those who "snob" Quake 2 because it looks nothing like Quake 1 visually speaking.
I still prefer Quake 1 but after playing this game, I think objectively this game is probably the better one.
I prefer the first one mostly because of the atmosphere and the physics of the game are more fun, the grenade launcher feels way better in Q1 for exemple, but my biggest problem with Q2 was the air control while you jump, you have none once you decide to jump in a direction contrary to Q1 where you have perfect air control while doing bunny hopping. It is really useful if you miss calculate a jump and try to avoid going into lava, it is even worse since there is way more plateforming in Q2.

Shoutout to the level designer and specifically the artist that made the textures for the level power plant.
The contrast between the hot red skybox with the cold grey heavy metal make this map one of the most aesthetically pleasing level that I’ve seen in a first person shooter and I’ve seen probably nearly a thousand different levels in different games.
