Despite having watched Haikyuu multiple times, this isn't something that ever particularly occured to me - that when Hinata didn't have a team, he didn't practice the one part of the game he'd be able to practise on his own.
Before he was able to join and practice alongside his teammates such as Kageyama, Tsukishima and Nishinoya, he was essentially on his own.
My initial reaction to this was that it was a minor plot hole, but of course, Furudate is far too smart for this. It likely stems from his over-idolising the Little Giant, however I think there's more to this...
