Saved seeds can harbor disease causing pathogens. Hot water treatment using kitchen equipment is an easy way to kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses that can be transmitted to next year’s crop. Heirloom and historical seed collections are often treated using hot water, and this method is also ideal for organic and no-spray production systems. Seeds such as cucumbers, melons, onion sets, peppers, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes can be treated with this method. This presentation provides step-by-step instructions for treating seeds using sous vides to regulate temperatures.
Diseases managed with hot water seed treatments include alfalfa mosaic virus, Alternaria leaf spot, anthracnose, bacterial canker, bacterial spot, bacterial leaf blight, Botrytis neck rot, Cercospora leaf spot, cucumber mosaic virus, early blight, Fusarium wilt, late blight, leaf mold, pepper mild mosaic virus, Phoma crown and root rot, Septoria leaf spot, tobacco mosaic virus, tomato mosaic virus, and verticillium wilt.
