Kash Patel, President Trump's choice to lead the FBI, will appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee where he is likely to face questions over his decision to fire agents who were seen as the president's enemies, lower the standards for hiring new agents and embrace of Trump's call to surge efforts to crack down on immigration and violent crime at the expense of other investigative initiatives.
Patel appeared to show how senior loyalists of President Trump regard themselves as battle-hardened warriors when he said he would see Charlie Kirk “in Valhalla”, the resting place of slain heroes in Norse mythology.
Patel, 45, told a press conference in Utah that the investigation into the fatal shooting made “historic progress”, stressing that it was his decision to release photos and video of the suspect, leading to him turning himself in 33 hours after the shooting.
“That’s what happens when you let cops be cops,” Patel said, a mantra that he uses for his strategy of freeing agents from back office duties to focus on combating crime.
