On 2/19/2026, the SC House passed its version of the so-called “Parental Rights Act,” H. 4757. During debate, representatives often focused the cause of action created in the bill for suing teachers.

Having seen how the State Board of Education has used its expanded book-banning powers, and how individuals have used that process to wreak havoc on schools and school libraries, we are deeply troubled at making it easier for bad-faith individuals and organizations to sue public educators. This is not the way to ensure the rights of ALL families and students.
