The term didn't come naturally, or easily, to East London native Shantell Martin, who says that, growing up, the idea of being an artist was something that felt totally foreign to her. "You know, I drew as a child," she says. "We all draw as children. I never knew it was art, because I didn't have artists around me. I didn't have galleries around me. I didn't have museums around me, so I didn't know it was art. And then you look at the internet at that time, or you go to the library, and you look at all these books and you see what real artists look like. You see what real design is, and what illustrators look like. And that time, I thought, that's not me. So I had this real complex, this real struggle, with myself about calling myself an artist because I felt, well, what gives me the right?"
