Terracotta Dice Found at Harappa (Ludo Die)
Harappa was an ancient city of the Indus Valley Civilization (2600–1800 BCE), located in present-day Punjab, Pakistan.
During excavations at Harappa between 1995 and 2001, a cubic die bearing markings from one to six dots was discovered in the debris. Similar dice have also been found in Mohenjo-daro.
John Marshall writes:
“In Mohenjo-daro, this was a common game, as evidenced by the large number of such pieces discovered. In all cases, they were made of terracotta (baked clay) and were generally cubic in shape, usually measuring about 1.2 × 1.2 inches to 1.5 × 1.5 inches — and in some cases, up to 1.5 inches in size.”
