These 70-foot-tall balloons were designed to ride the jet stream at 30,000 feet for 70 hours, carrying one 33-pound anti-personnel bomb and two incendiary devices to start forest fires in the American Northwest. Only about 300 balloons were confirmed to reach North America, but experts believe nearly 1,000 made it across the Pacific. The attack killed six civilians in Oregon—the only Americans to die from enemy action on U.S. soil during WWII. The balloons represented the first intercontinental weapon system, predating intercontinental ballistic missiles by over a decade.
