Thunder Jack Hikes to the Highest Point in Vermont [Mount Mansfield] - Hiking With Dogs

Описание: Join Tom, Tom's dog (Thunder "Jack" Cheese), and Tom's mom (Dottie) for a hike to the summit of Mount Mansfield -- the highest point in Vermont!

This Mount Mansfield hike starts in Underhill State Park and is one of the best hikes in Vermont (and arguably one of the best in New England). It's also one of the more difficult routes to the peak. After a brief stint on the Eagle Cut Trail, we reach a junction and follow an old CCC road, before reaching the Maple Ridge Trail.

The Maple Ridge Trail starts out weaving through the trees but eventually climbs above the treeline, becoming rocky and exposed. Keep an eye out for the gap in the trail... Jack wasn't confident in his ability to jump the gap and waited for assistance. This was a good lesson in knowing your limitations and erring on the side of safety.

The Maple Ridge Trail ends at the Forehead (Mansfield Ridge is thought to resemble a man's face staring at the sky, with prominent features labeled as the Forehead, Nose, and Chin), and the Long Trail takes us across the ridge line, eventually arriving at the Sunset Ridge Trail. Along the way, there are excellent views and a small visitors' center at the top of the auto toll road. The Chin, the highest point on the mountain, is just past the intersection with the Sunset Ridge Trail, which takes us back down the mountain.
