When markets fall, headlines say investors lost lakhs of crores. That figure usually refers to the drop in the total market capitalisation of listed companies, often on the BSE. But does that money actually go to someone else?
Using a simple example of a company whose market value drops from ₹900 crore to ₹300 crore, this short explains what market value really measures and why trades in a small fraction of shares can reprice every share. It also explains why a fall in value is not the same as cash leaving the market.
The loss of wealth is real for shareholders. Still, an investor who has not sold holds a lower valuation, not a booked loss, and prices can recover. For the company, the bank balance does not shrink with the share price. A lower valuation can still make raising fresh capital costlier and reduce the worth of stock-based deals and employee stock options.
