Dive with the shark expert team @ONEOCEANDIVING 7 days a week on the island of Oahu. In this Video filmed by @juansharks There were two Tiger sharks competing with one another for something as it drifted closer I realized it was a plastic bag, I rushed over to grab it and remove it from the water and they got a little competitive with me, the most dominant one Scarlett pushing Momi away and then coming to me so I gently redirected her but she opted to she swam around me to inspect @JuanSharks who was next to the boat with it and then being nonconfrontational with him turned towards the ladder, I quickly lifted it so she wouldn’t bump her tag-damaged dorsal on it.
I think it's really unfortunate. How glorified tagging is especially this kind that requires a shark to be caught, risking breaking its jaw, and then tied to the side of a boat to have its dorsal fin drilled through and permanently mutilated, because this type of tagging is a very common Point of serious entanglement. I've had to cut fishing nets and line off of sharks with these types of dorsal fin tags called “SAT Tags” more than any kind of tag it's actually one of the only kind that I see commonly with fishing gear and biofouling (marine animal growth often consisting of shark barnacles, algae, etc) the bio filing also causes a natural drag. The coloration of these tags may affect the sharks, natural camouflage, called counter, shading, allowing them to be more easily spotted by Potential. Pray items and lessening their chances of successful ambush style predation. These types of tags have implications for the health and well-being of sharks and have been a part of jaw breaks and death in Tiger sharks, White Sharks, and other species.
There are less invasive types of tagging that do not require a shark to be caught and those are X ternal he applied acoustic tags with a metal feather and wire line, these types corrode easily, and with enough force, if entangled can be pulled from the skin without the risk of death. Over the course of a year or two the wire line Will usually corrode and the tag detach around the same amount of time as the battery dies. Most often they are dark gray in color, so not being as contrasting to the sharks counter shading. Shark identification is the least invasive method of studying Shark site, Fidelity, and can provide a more extensive amount of information about the behavior and utilization of a specific area by the sharks however, it is more labor-intensive as it requires being in water for accuracy. I understand that the budget constraints or the goals of certain research looking at spatial distribution, may not be able to employ less invasive methods, but should be considerate of the well-being of the animals and be hyper selective about using quick-corrode-bolts or wires with a break away attachment or PSAT or Pop off tags which are SAT tags attached with the same method as an external acoustic and dont require a shark to be caught, therefore not risking its JAW being broken or internal organ damage.
My preferred method of study from in water, behavioral recordings and analysis requires a lot of time and also a certain skill set that is not taught at any University currently, however this type of study has been used for more recent and less invasive study methods with dorsal fin cameras, EDNA analysis, and other shark behavior and environmental impact studies by past students of mine now working on their masters and PhD.
In the latter part of the video clip, I demonstrate how I will either move close to the boat, or remove myself from the water, when a new shark first approaches the area, so the sharks can converse with themselves, essentially establishing their social hierarchy without putting myself as a POI, which is a point of interest, or distraction from their natural social hierarchal establishment behavior.Shark Behavior, Shark, sharks, shark Diving, diving, ocean conservation, ocean Adventure, adventure, Thrilling, exciting, baby animals, amazing wildlife encounters, Expedition, Ocean, Underwater, Predator, Wildlife, Scuba, Experience, Excursion, Exploration, Danger, Ethology, Animal behavior, Marine Scientist, Shark behaviorist, shark scientists, Fear, Discovery, Education, Conservation, Marine life, Apex predator, Teeth, Jaws, Fins, Gills, Habitat, Prey, Hunting, Behavior, Species, Conservation, Cage diving, Swimmers, Conservation, Research, Ecosystem, Deep sea, Scuba gear, Wetsuit, Snorkeling, Sightseeing, Boat tour, Marine biology, Underwater photography, Conservation, Ecosystem, Conservation, Migration, Reef, Seabed, one ocean diving, oneoceandiving, one ocean, oneocean shark diving
