The Persuaders! was a stylish British action-adventure TV series that aired from 1971 to 1972, starring Roger Moore (fresh from The Saint) and Tony Curtis (the Hollywood star of Some Like It Hot).
Premise: The show followed two wealthy playboys—Lord Brett Sinclair (Moore), an aristocratic Englishman, and Danny Wilde (Curtis), a self-made American millionaire from the Bronx. Thrown together by retired Judge Fulton (Laurence Naismith), they were coerced into using their unique skills and backgrounds to solve crimes, fight corruption, and help those in trouble, often with humor and banter.
Tone & Style: Known for its mix of glamour, witty dialogue, exotic European locations, and lighthearted action, it leaned more toward fun adventure than gritty crime drama. The chemistry between Moore’s suave sophistication and Curtis’s streetwise brashness was the series’ biggest draw.
Production: Created by Robert S. Baker and produced by ITC (the same company behind The Saint, Danger Man, and The Prisoner), it ran for 24 episodes. The lavish production was one of the most expensive TV series of its time, filmed across the UK, France, and Italy.
Legacy: Although it lasted only one season due to modest ratings in the U.S., it was a huge success in Europe, especially in France and Germany, where it became a cult classic. Roger Moore’s performance directly led to him being cast as James Bond the following year.
Theme Music: The iconic, jazzy opening theme was composed by John Barry, who also scored many James Bond films.
