This sonata was recorded by ARPARLA in March 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine. This sonata, as nearly all the Rosary sonatas (excluding Sonatas No. 1 and 16), uses a scordatura tuning, which is, in this case: C4—E4—A4—E5.
This sonata refers to the Gospel Reading that describes the moment when Jesus carries the Cross and walks to Golgotha/Calvary. The atmosphere is sad and does not inspire any hope for the future. This is the affect expressed in the first part of the sonata. The Cross is heavy and Jesus' walk is unstable, mirrored by the fast and irregular descending and ascending scales at the end of the first movement. The following Courante and the two Doubles seem to describe the procession of people that follow Jesus. In his dialogue with the crying women, Jesus describes a series of apocalyptic prophecies. In the final movement, the scene returns to Jesus and the Cross, finally arrived at Golgotha. The atmosphere is now heavy and dramatic: this movement seems the end of this sonata and at the same time the beginning of the next sonata: The Crucifixion.
Rhetorical strategies are not a perfect science but can help the performer and listener to experience the narrative within music, according to the ancient purpose of the art of Oratory: "movere, docere & delectare",
May art, visual and aural, bring hope and growth for a better world in the future.
