Merkel in China vows defence of free trade

Описание: (6 Sep 2019) Leaders of China and Germany vowed to defend free trade and multilateralism amid the escalating trade tension between China and the United States.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang Friday while visiting Beijing.
The two leaders witnessed the signing of cooperative agreements by companies from China and Germany involving areas of aviation, environment, new energy, automobiles and finance.
At a joint press conference, both leaders emphasised the importance of maintaining free trade and multilateral mechanism.
Li also told reporters that German companies are welcome in China and will have a relatively easier time getting things approved because the two countries have a foundation of trust. He and Merkel discussed collaboration on artificial intelligence and self-driving vehicles, as well as intellectual property rights and reducing export controls, Li said.
U.S.-China trade tensions have also impacted German businesses, Merkel said, adding that China and Germany hope to serve as models for defending multilateral trade relationships.
China was Germany's biggest single trading partner last year, with trade totaling 199 billion euros (218 billion US dollars).
