In this video, I trace the complete history of the third Venture brother, from his first appearance at Rusty’s Day Camp to his complicated relationship with Hank, Dean, Brock, and Dr Venture. Along the way, I break down Dermott’s compulsive lying, his deeply confusing family background, and why he often feels more unsettling than funny.
Dermott presents himself as grungy, streetwise, and dangerous — but like Jay Cartwright from The Inbetweeners, most of his credibility collapses under scrutiny. From exaggerated stories about girls to improbable tales about his father, Dermott is the Ventureverse’s ultimate Billy Bullsh*tter.
Things get even stranger when we look at how Dermott moves through the Venture Compound, how easily he inserts himself into Hank’s life, and how heavily he references Fight Club. After a spoiler warning, I explore a deliberately paranoid theory: that Dermott may not exist at all — and could instead be a psychological coping mechanism created by Hank.
The Venture Bros has always played with unreliable reality, fractured identities, and characters who believe impossible things. When you place Dermott alongside Hank’s alter egos, Dean’s fantasy episodes, The Monarch’s delusions, and the show’s long history of memory wipes and psychological damage, the theory becomes… at least plausible.
This video is part character history, part theory breakdown, and part excuse to finally get something off my chest that’s been bothering me for years.
Let me know what you think. Is Dermott just an awkward, damaged teenager — or is there something genuinely uncanny going on?
