On June 24, 1944, a Canadian PBY Catalina flying boat spotted a German U-Boat in the freezing skies above the Norwegian Sea. What followed became one of the most heroic air battles of World War II.
Flight Lieutenant David “Pop” Hornell led his crew in a daring attack against U-Boat 1225 under heavy enemy fire. After destroying the submarine, his own aircraft was critically damaged and forced to crash-land into the icy sea.
For 21 hours, Hornell kept his men alive in freezing water, sacrificing his own warmth and survival for others. Five of his crew survived because of his courage, leadership, and selfless bravery. Hornell paid the ultimate price.
He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest honor for valor.
This is the true story of a hero who gave his life so his men could live.
