We are delighted to reveal that the Panathlon Joy Garden – debuting at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024 – will be relocated permanently to Marjorie McClure School in Chislehurst, London, after the world-famous show has ended.
The legacy of this uniquely special garden will continue to bring joy and inspiration to everyone at Marjorie McClure School, which educates children aged 4-19 years old with complex medical needs and physical disabilities.
As one of the first schools to fully embrace Panathlon competitions back in 2005, Marjorie McClure School has been a hugely enthusiastic participant in Panathlon events ever since.
The school hosted the original South London Finals, and as Panathlon expanded across London and the rest of the UK, participants from Marjorie McClure School also travelled to various locations to join in, notably the Olympic Park for the London-wide Finals.
It seems wholly fitting, therefore, that this school will benefit from hosting the Panathlon Joy Garden when it gets relocated to its new permanent home, fresh from RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024 in May.
Adil Ghani, a former pupil of the school who became a trustee of the Panathlon charity, recognises the benefit for both parties, commenting: “When the school moved to its new site in September 2023 (CHECK!) the building was beautiful, but the outside areas were a little bland in comparison. Relocating the Panathlon Joy Garden here enables us to find the perfect home for the garden and the chance to honour the Panathlon charity. Having such a prestigious garden in our grounds will hugely enhance the school’s outdoor space.”
Marjorie McClure School Headteacher Rebecca Cottage adds: “We are so excited to welcome and to host the Panathlon Joy Garden at our school. It will certainly bring much ‘joy’ to pupils, staff, and visitors for many years to come.”
Panathlon is proud to have played a role in shaping the Marjorie McClure School’s curriculum as well as providing numerous highlights for pupils and staff. The team at Panathlon is absolutely honoured to know that this special garden will live on there.
Liz Johnson, Panathlon Chair and Paralympian, explains: “We trust that after 150,000 visitors see the garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in May, the garden will continue to provide joy and inspiration to everyone who attends, visits and teaches at Marjorie McClure School.”
The Panathlon Joy Garden marks the inaugural show garden for the Panathlon charity at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024 and the very first wheelchair-accessible garden in the All About Plants section.
The Panathlon Joy Garden is supported by Project Giving Back, the unique grant-giving charity that funds gardens for good causes at RHS Chelsea.
