Now she is back with her sixth novel, Nowhere Burning, a dark reworking of Peter Pan that will appeal to fans of Riley Sager and the hit series “Yellowjackets.”

The novel follows Riley, who drags her younger brother Oliver into the night and heads for Nowhere, the burned out ranch of disgraced movie star Leaf Winham, exposed as a murderer after a fire tore through his mountain estate. Rumour has it that a tribe of feral teenagers now run the place, a world without adults and without rules. Riley is chasing sanctuary, a new family and a clean break. But the Nowhere Kids guard their territory fiercely, and it does not take long for her to realise that freedom and captivity can look frighteningly similar from the inside. The ranch may be abandoned, but something still lies in wait within its charred bones.

In anticipation of Nowhere Burning arriving in the UK on 19 February 2026 and 20 February in the US, CinemaChords’ Howard Gorman spoke with Ward about writing under the expectation of the “big twist,” particularly in the wake of Needless Street. They also discussed the mechanics of reshaping a cultural heavyweight like Peter Pan before turning to how the novel twists the idea of refuge into something far more sinister than it first appears.
