This LabCoP ECHO Session focuses on CD4 testing in advanced HIV disease management.
WHO defines advanced HIV disease (AHD) as CD4 cell count less than 200 cells/mm³ or WHO stage 3/4 in adults and adolescents and all children under 5 years of age.
CD4 cell count testing, while no longer needed for treatment initiation or monitoring, remains essential for identifying people with AHD. Despite global progress in HIV care, AHD remains a major contributor to HIV-related morbidity and mortality across Africa. Late presentation, treatment interruption, and delayed clinical decision-making continue to challenge health systems.
Re-establishing CD4 testing as a priority in identifying individuals with AHD is critical in picking out recipients of care at risk, guiding appropriate interventions, and reducing preventable deaths.
In this session, we explore why CD4 testing must return to the center of HIV clinical management.
