This time I visited the Kodokan! Despite being such a large facility to learn about Japanese culture, there are hardly any tourists! A must-see for those who want to take their time touring!!
↓ About the Kodokan 🖋↓
The Kodokan in Mito City is a historic building designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, built by the 9th lord of the Mito Domain, Tokugawa Nariaki. He encouraged academic pursuits and aimed to "build the spiritual foundation of the Japanese people", influencing the Meiji Restoration significantly.
The Kodokan was a school established by Nariaki as part of his domain reforms, where Confucianism, Chinese poetry, and national history were taught. The buildings of the Kodokan preserve the architectural style of the Edo period, with the 'Daiseiden', known as the main hall, designated as a National Treasure. Due to its scale and lavish decorations, it is sometimes referred to as the 'Versailles of the East'.
Today, the Kodokan is open to the public as a museum within its grounds, where you can see its historic buildings, gardens, and exhibits commemorating Nariaki's achievements. Nariaki's grave is also located within the premises.
Mito City in Ibaraki Prefecture is a regional city located about 2 hours by train from Tokyo, and besides the Kodokan, there are many tourist spots, such as the famous Kairakuen and places associated with the Tokugawa family, known for Mito Komon
