On 7/20/23, the Thursday of our week up in Vermont, I set out to revisit a peak we had climbed back in July of 2021, Camel's Hump, the only undeveloped peak of Vermont's 4000 Footers. I woke up around 6am already grinning at what was turning into a beautiful day with intermittent clouds and cool, dry temps.
Back in 2021 we had done Camel's Hump from the Monroe trailhead to the east, and made a loop up the Dean Trail, to the Long Trail North over Camel's Hump, and back down Monroe. After all the rain Vermont had (that road up to Monroe I remember being...well...interesting) and with a desire to check out a different route, I decided on a shorter and somewhat steeper route (at least for a good 1/2 of mile section) using the Burrow's trailhead from the west, and then the Long Trail South to Camel's Hump out and back.
The first time we had bagged Camel's Hump views were pretty limited with storms moving in from the west. We had decent views but nothing like the 360 degree view I was afforded on this day. It was great to see the "full" view this time. Panorama included Mount Mansfield and its "Chin" to the North, the Whites to the far east, the Monroe Skyline to the South, Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks (notably Whiteface/Esther as well as the High Peaks Wilderness Area with Marcy and the gang) to the west. It was nothing short of stunning and I see why this summit has gained a reputation for one of the finest views in Vermont and the Green Mountains. Clouds moved in and out creating quite a light show while I was on the summit for nearly 2 hours.
I had the summit to myself for nearly an hour that morning which was pretty awesome to say the least (and why I was able to get so many extended shots of the scenery up there). It was incredibly relaxing and I tried to spend ample time taking in each and every portion of the scenery. It was super cool being able to see a full spectrum from the Whites, to the Green Mountains, to the Adirondacks, and how our passion of hiking has led us and me to all these different places in the northeast.
Worth mentioning is also the extensive trail-work being done on Burrow's on the way up there, from new drainages, braiding, and clearing existing drainages, among other things, great work up there to the folks maintaining!
I tried to take it slower with the editing on this one, the mountains are an incredibly special place to me and many others, and being able to take in everything by yourself sometimes I feel is necessary for all sorts of reasons. It was a great day.
