Welcome to our video. Tanbo art turns rice fields into seasonal canvases. The technique began in Inakadate, Aomori, in 1993 as a community revitalization project. Volunteers plant multiple rice varieties with different leaf colors to build large‑scale images on a precise grid. From mid‑summer through early autumn, the design comes to life—sometimes with clever perspective tricks that look 3D from an observation deck. Many towns host public planting days in late May to June, then harvest the edible rice in autumn. You’ll also find impressive displays in Gyoda, Saitama, and other rural areas. Travel tips: check local tourism sites for event dates and deck hours, bring rubber boots or sandals you don’t mind muddy, carry a towel and sun protection, and follow staff guidance to avoid stepping on unplanted rows. Expect a small fee for viewing platforms. Photography is welcome from designated spots. If you love authentic, hands‑on culture, planting rice alongside locals and watching the mural grow week by week is a uniquely Japanese memory.
