STORYLINE:
The European Union is trying to address its housing crisis with an affordable housing plan.

Initially announced in December 2025, the plan is set on pillars such as boosting supply, gathering investment in a joint platform with public authorities and the private sector as well as addressing the impact of short term rentals.

Speaking in Lisbon alongside the city’s mayor, EU Commissioner for Housing Dan Jorgensen said he believed cities should be a place “where normal people with normal jobs – nurses, teachers, police officers - are able to afford to live where they serve.”

He went on to add that “having a house is a human right.”

Lisbon is one of Europe’s most affected cities regarding housing with prices skyrocketing in the past years.
