Humility Leadership / Humble Leadership - What Is It And How Do We Practice it? In this extended video discussion, we are going to be talking about a once widely talked about personal trait, though it’s gone out of fashion in this modern selfie age. This is a trait characterised by an ability to accurately acknowledge one’s limitations and abilities, and an interpersonal stance that is other-oriented rather than self- focused. This trait is called Humility.
Psychologists have long thought that measuring someone on a scale of just five personality dimensions – agreeableness, extroversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness and openness to new experiences – can capture all the variation in behaviour and attitude seen in the human race.
But if we think about iconic characters in TV that we’ve seen recently, from Frank Underwood in House of Cards to Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones, there’s a trait that some of our most memorable villains have in spades: Machiavellianism. Yet until recently this has been overlooked by most of personality science.
What this indicates is that it turns out that we may have been overlooking a crucial sixth personality trait – and it’s not a pretty one. It’s known as honesty-humility, but it’s people who are lacking in those two qualities that new measures of personality traits are designed to pick out.
Join us in our discussion on humility in leadership, and comment on what you think about our 5 ways to extend humility in your leadership:
1. Promote and acknowledge others.
2. Be collaborative.
3. Show integrity
4. Be appreciative
5. Show humanity
