Words & Music by Phil Collins and Steve Hackett
From the Genesis Album WIND & WUTHERING (1976)
It all started when my dear friend DerOpitz expressed discontent with the way in which Genesis guitar genius Steve Hackett had played the intro of the song back in 1976 and how it sounded. He said the playing was unrhythmic and the sound dull. I had to admit that this very fact had kept torturing me for the last 45 years, too. So I decided to heal this gaping wound and make a cover of the intro for my friend.
However, I couldn't stop after the intro, the song is so intriguing and I have loved it for so long. The rest is definitely not history, but a nice cover, stripped down to the very bones of the song, as the arrangement consists of guitar, bass, and vocals only.
Progressive Rock, or Prog Rock, is veeeery much out of fashion. The idea of Prog with its complicated harmonies and rhythm survives in Prog Metal.
Something I have never understood: This musical style seems to appeal to men only, I know a lot of guys who like it, but hardly any women. Why ist that?
The WIND & WUTHERING album from 1976 marks the end of Genesis's Prog Rock era. Most of it still falls into the genre, but you can already see (or rather hear) the dawn of Phil Collins's taking over most of the composition duties and making Genesis sound more conventional and pop. So, anyone interested in the old style of the band can start from here and make their way back.
