My own writeup about this audiobook to go on my website soon, but here's a little writeup in this section. I haven't done my own translation of the Dao De Jing yet. This audiobook is based on the James Legge translation. It's a good translation, but in many places it diverges far from the original in terms of flow and general wordcounts (but you should see what a bad translation looks like). Ideal for a matching translation audiobook would be a translation that matches the original more closely. It's not hard to find dozens of different translations of the Dao De Jing on the internet, including many that match more closely, but most are copyrighted and for many it is hard to look up the copyright status. The Legge translation is more than 100 years old, so it's definitely one of the translations that's had its copyright expire.
I don't agree with everything the Dao De Jing says. I think the author of the Dao De Jing also doesn't agree with the Dao De Jing in many places. But the Dao De Jing is written with rhythm, rhyme, and tonal patterns, so that gives the author a full poetic license to say the opposite of what he means whenever he wants. In my opinion, a large part of the value of a matching translation is to make that status of "this is totally in the form of a poem" apparent to listeners who don't know Chinese.
I also disagree with Legge's translation of the Dao De Jing in many places, perhaps most places. The random breaking out into rhyme is pretty stupid.
