In the end that single bottle of water he's holding might be the lifeline that keeps them from completely breaking down. Every second counts and one missed handoff could mean the difference between finishing and collapsing. Even though everyone looks like they're totally locked in and pushing through the pain there's always one person suffering more than the rest. That cyclist needs this water more than anyone else and this kid is their only hope. The moment he hands it over you can see the desperation in their eyes as they grab it. Without him that rider might not make it to the finish line.
