Finally! A composer whose name literally everyone has heard: the great “John Smith”! OK, all humor aside: his full name, John Christopher Smith, was in actuality a translation from his birth name “Johann Christoph Schmidt”, for this fine composer had been born in Germany (in Ansbach), and went to England at the age of four, together with his family, when his father, also a musician, decided to go there. In fact, J.C. Smith senior became the first copyist of Handel; the two knew each other from earlier years in Halle (Germany). Our composer (Smith the younger) had the good fortune to take lessons from Handel, as well as from J.C. Pepusch, and Thomas Roseingrave. Smith later became Handel’s secretary, and when Handel went blind in later years, he dictated music to Smith, who then penned the scores. Smith’s music is, not surprisingly, “Handelian” in style, and is in truth quite effective. Smith’s greatest success was an oratorio called “Paradise Lost”, which was first performed in 1760. That same year, Smith, already in his late 40s, married for the first and only time. John Christopher Smith wrote a lot of keyboard music, which has only recently been “re-discovered” by harpsichordists.
