Did you know you can create professional looking banners with just your vinyl cutter? Banners can be made with standard outdoor adhesive decal vinyl and still look great.
Not sure where to start? Don’t worry! We have some tips on creating custom banners with your vinyl cutter and sign vinyl.
What Kind of Banner Material Do I Need?
First of all, you will need the banner or banner material to get started. You can buy banners that are already cut to size, hemmed, and include grommets if you wish. Try creating the banners yourself to make more profit.
Arlon DPF 313 Banner Material - This is a high quality, 13oz scrim banner material. It’s 1000 denier which is on the higher end of the scale quality wise. It is very strong and durable. It also has lay-flat and curl resistant features that make it ideal for outdoor use.
DuraSol 13oz. Super Smooth Banner Material - This banner material is also a high quality, 13oz banner. This product has a block out feature which you will want if you are decorating both sides of the banner. When the banner material is in a well-lit or very sunny area, you cannot see through to the other side.
DuraSol 10oz. Economy Banner Material - This is a lighter weight and more affordable banner option. This is a one-sided banner and does not offer the block-out feature.
Hemming and Adding Grommets
Hemming ensures the banner is strong and reinforced when hung. If you do not have the ability to sew the hem, you can use Double-Sided Hem Tape. This is a two-sided tape that allows you to fold the banner material over itself creating a “hemmed” edge. You could also skip folding the banner over and use Bannerups Power Tape. This tape is designed to be adhered to the back side of the banners edges to reinforce the edges for grommets. It also keeps the banners edges and corners from curling.
Grommets make the banner look professional and make it durable. A sturdy area to hang the banner from is important to prevent rips and tears in the banner itself. If you are producing a lot of banner jobs, a grommet machine is a great addition to your business. While it may not be justified if you are doing a few here and there, it makes the process a lot easier. You can also use this grommet machine to put grommets in Coroplast™, Tyvek®, poster board, styrene, and other signage as well. So if you are expanding, I’d suggest grabbing one now to save yourself some time later on.
Applying Vinyl to Your Banner
If you’re already working with vinyl, this step is pretty much self-explanatory. Have you considered offering upgrades on banners with specialty vinyl? For example, use a vinyl such as DuraCal 530 Calendered Sign Vinyl for your standard option. Then offer a vinyl like our DuraCast Glitter sign vinyl as an upgrade. The DuraCast Glitter offers a unique feature to the banner that your customers may not find elsewhere. Most customers wouldn’t know to ask for such a thing if they didn’t see it as an example or an option.
Tips
Make sure that your design is sized correctly for the banner. Sometimes we forget to take into account the lost area from hemming.
Apply the vinyl to the smoother of the two sides of the banner. One side will be less rigid and textured. The smooth side is where you want to be. This allows the vinyl’s adhesive to create a better bond with the surface and increases its durability.
Measure and measure again! There is nothing worse than a crooked graphic on a banner. Take the time to measure out and place your graphics/text.
The Last Steps
So your banner is complete… now to price it. Don’t underprice! Banners are one of the most profitable products that you can produce. Just because this isn’t a full color or printed graphic doesn’t mean you shouldn’t price for your time and designing. After any design fees that you may charge (and should be charging), you can add anywhere from $5.00 per square foot up to $8.00 per square foot. You will want to be on the high side if you are using multiple colors, specialty vinyl, or if your local competition is thrown into the mix.
