Yamaha SY55 'VCF String' Through SPX900 Chorus

The SY55 is often regarded as being somewhat overshadowed by its SY Series siblings. However, I would argue that this model is a fine addition to the lineup, offering some excellent sound possibilities by virtue of its beautiful characteristics. Standard, the Yamaha SY55 contains 74 waveforms and 64 presets. These are made possible by the ‘mere’ 2MB of sample ROM. Weighing in at about 10kg, it boasts solid build quality and a pleasant tactile experience. Among the SY series, it also feels like the one that fits most seamlessly into its design, being understated yet precise, modest and correct.

I decided to run it through a chorus effect from the Yamaha SPX900 (1988). The SPX900 is the last one of its family that had a mono in and stereo out. Most of the patches will bring a good amount of late eighties/early nineties flavour to your gear of choice. It cuts through the mix and parameters are easy to access. I have always found the SPX effects to sound very nice. I've used the SPX900 just as much as modern, more contemporary fx units.
