Fireline Video: Watch as a Moose and Baby Swim Across the Draanjik River Chalkyitsik Complex

Описание: River Group Supervisor and Smokejumper Nathan Hesse filmed this video of a moose and her baby crossing the Draanjik River during normal boating operations. Crews have been shuttling up and down the Draanjik River preventing fire spread and protecting Native allotments. Under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, Native allotments are provided full protection as long as it does not endanger the safety of the firefighters or the public and as long as resources are available.

The highest priority for all fire personnel is ensuring the protection of the Gwich’in village of Chalkyitsik. Fire crews continue work to secure the line in the vicinity of Ohtig Lake working north along indirect lines. In this short "insider" video from the fireline, the Tanana Chiefs Type 2 Initial Attack Fire Crew hike along the established containment lines to a different work area. The stacked firewood are impacted trees that need to be removed for either purposes of maintaining containment of the wildfire or because they have become fire weakened trees. The firelines for the Chalkyitsik Complex are in a very remote area of the Yukon Flats and far away from any road system. Families who own Native allotments or private cabins will be able to carry the firewood stacks to their cabins. Crews work 16 hour days with the focus on work safely while ensuring that all firefighters know and understand the "end state" of their actions and work. In this case, the end state is to protect the local village, native allotments and private structures as safety and resources allow.
